Already in the early 2000s, Arjuna owners and lipid researchers Benny and Marina Anthony started looking for a technology that would increase the absorption of pure Curcumin in a safe and natural way - i.e. without changing the safety profile of Turmeric.
A breakthrough came when the research team tried adding different forms of fats to Curcumin, including plant oils (phospholipids) and omega 3. Uptake increased but not enough. On the other hand, when Arjuna tried adding Turmerones, the natural essential oils found in Turmeric - then came the result.
The absorption was as effective as that of natural Turmeric - but with an important difference. BCM95 contains about 30 times higher concentration of the active substances, the Curcuminoids (curcumin, demethoxycurcumin and 6 bisdemethoxycurcumin).
The combination of Curcumin and Turmerones is protected by 29 patents.
- By taking a step back and mimicking nature, we solved the problem of low bioavailability. Other companies try to manipulate absorption by adding emulsifiers or creating nano-particles. Another common way to increase uptake is to add black pepper extract, which we wanted to avoid because black pepper extract is suspected of interacting with many drugs, including blood thinners.
- We were surprised that something as simple as Tumerones was the solution - but with hindsight it makes sense. The closer you get to nature, the better.
